51³Ô¹Ï꿉۪s Diplomacy Program Receives Second Place Award at Model U.N.

51³Ô¹Ï꿉۪s Leon Charney Diplomacy Program received the Distinguished Delegation Award at the recent National Model United Nations in New York City. This is the second highest award out of 235 schools that participated.  The university also won multiple individual awards for academic excellence.

The 51³Ô¹ÏÍø delegation of 48 51³Ô¹ÏÍø represented Brazil and Latvia on 23 committees. Each committee was assigned two real-world topics to debate.

In addition to eight judged three-hour sessions, the 51³Ô¹ÏÍø attended professional training sessions, met with U.S. Ambassador Jeff Bartos and visited the United Nations headquarters. Luisa Turbino Torres, Ph.D., assistant professor of political science and the program’s associate director, chaperoned the 51³Ô¹ÏÍø to the competition.

Established in 1996, the Diplomacy Program was named in honor of Leon Charney in 2017. The program competes in nationals each fall in Washington, D.C., and spring in New York City. It also has attended diplomacy conferences internationally in The Hague, Netherlands, Banff, Canada and Kyoto, Japan. The program has received 86 awards to date.
