YEARS OF SERVICE AWARDS AND SPECIAL AWARDS

Every year, 51Թ hosts the Annual Employee Service Awards Ceremony to acknowledge employees with minimally five or more years of service. In addition to the service awards, there are three additional categories of “special awards” in the area of leadership ( President’s Leadership Award ), exemplary service within one’s role ( Gabor Exemplary Employee Award ) and service and dedication beyond assigned duties ( Pat Cheung Distinguished Award ).

51Թ is proud to recognize the recipients of the 2026 Special Service Awards. These individuals exemplify dedication, service, and excellence in support of the 51Թ community.

Shaik Mohammed Kashif picture

Shaik Mohammed Kashif serves as a Business Intelligence and Process Analyst in the Controller’s Office, where his innovative use of analytics platforms, automation tools, and training resources has significantly improved financial processes and transparency across the University. His work has saved more than 40 hours of manual processing time per week and includes the development of a web-based Florida Prepaid Tuition Estimator—making 51Թ the first institution in the state to offer this tool to 51Թ and families. His meaningful, forward-thinking contributions exemplify excellence in service and innovation.

Linda Marie Petersen headshot

Linda Marie Petersen serves as the Neuroscience Graduate Program Coordinator at the 51Թ Stiles Nicholson Brain Institute, where she has played a pivotal role in the success of the Institute’s Ph.D. program since its launch four years ago. Through strengthening recruitment efforts, streamlining administrative processes, and designing student centered resources, she has helped attract more competitive applicants while reducing barriers to success. Known as a trusted and supportive resource for 51Թ, Linda provides a concierge level experience during on site interviews, oversees teaching assistantships, and meets individually with 51Թ to help them map their plans of study. Her dedication and student focused approach embody exemplary service to the University.

Dr. Maria Carmenza Mejia headshot

Dr. Maria Carmenza Mejia is a Professor in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine and the recipient of the University Faculty Service Award. Through service on more than ten organizations—including multiple leadership roles as chair and co chair—she has demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to advancing service at the local, state, and national levels. Her work bridges a deep passion for medicine with institutional priorities, advancing health education, workforce development, and community initiatives, particularly in support of underserved populations. By building strong partnerships, Dr. Mejia fosters clinical collaboration, expands access to care, and contributes meaningfully to improved health outcomes.

Ion Mavrodin headshot

Ion Mavrodin is a Senior Project Manager in Facilities Management, Design and Construction and the recipient of the Patrick Cheung Distinguished Service Award. A graduate of 51Թ’s Civil Engineering program, he has served the University for nearly 23 years, leading some of 51Թ’s most complex and high impact capital projects, including the Student Union, the new A.D. Henderson University School, and Talon Hall, scheduled for completion in fall 2026. Beyond the excellence of his work, Ion is deeply committed to the 51Թ community—mentoring colleagues, fostering collaboration within his team, and giving back to 51Թ in the Civil Engineering program through mentorship and guidance on senior capstone projects. Through both the facilities he has helped build and the people he has supported along the way, he has made a lasting impact that exemplifies distinguished service.

**Important Changes to Special Awards**

51Թ is introducing the Patrick Cheung Distinguished Service Award to recognize an employee whose sustained service extends beyond assigned duties and contributes in significant, lasting ways to the University community. Named in honor of Patrick Cheung, a colleague widely respected for his technical expertise, readiness to step in when needed, and demonstrated commitment to 51Թ and its people, this award reflects the value of service grounded in reliability, presence, and follow-through. The Patrick Cheung Distinguished Service Award celebrates service that is often quiet but essential — honoring individuals whose actions support others, sustain continuity, and strengthen the systems that allow the University to function effectively.

New this year, Special Award nominations must be submitted by a nominee’s direct supervisor or their Area Dean, Vice President, or equivalent. Others may contribute supporting attestations to a nomination but may not submit a nomination independently.
